local craftmanship: satchel leather handbags - the power of passion series

Enter a beautiful quaint boutique in the heart of the Historic District  on the main shopping strip aka Broughton street. Sunny, well lit and happily cluttered with leather bags of all sizes, this is a wonderful place to explore. Business partners, Elizabeth and Mahala, who are SCAD graduates, were kind enough to take the time to tell me a little about Satchel handbags. Elizabeth and Mahala both studied fashion, and by the time Elizabeth graduated she knew she wanted to go into the fashion realm of "Accessories" - handbags, cases, bracelets, belts, and key tags to name a few. The items are all made in-house by a very small, personal production team of designers and sewers. Elizabeth, Mahala and another one or two sewers create the items and redesign every season.

  • Where did you guys meet? Mahala, from Ohio and Elizabeth, of Louisiana, met at SCAD and became fast friends. It's apparent they enjoy working together, which is kind of crucial when spending full days in the shop designing and sewing. Good for them!
  • What was your major at SCAD? Fashion Design. At the time, there wasn't an Accessories Major, so this was the natural degree to pursue and use as a springboard into the realm of handbags and other leather goods.
  • How long has Satchel been around? Satchel opened in 2007 and has been on Broughton Street ever since. Elizabeth opened the store on her own and a few years later, Mahala joined to help sew and create the goods. All the work is done in the back of their airy beautiful shop, where there are sewing tables set up with multiple machines and all the supplies necessary.
  • Long term plans for Satchel? To become a lifestyle brand, adding women's clothing, outerwear, leather shoes, etc.

Awesome. Well, that was fun and inspiring talking to those two! The power of passion - creating something from nothing. I love it! Who knows, maybe there's a collaboration in the future???? Go to ShopSatchel.com to see more of their beautiful leather goods!
